The Diplomat is an intricate and fast-paced action thriller that charts a dangerous and duplicitous game played between the secret services and a terrorist cell intent on killing hundreds of thousands of innocents with a nuclear bomb. As international tensions are raised and nuclear Armageddon looms, one man's loyalties will be questioned and pushed to the limit. When at Heathrow Airport 20 pounds of heroin is found in a container allegedly sealed by British diplomat Ian Porter (Dougray Scott), Scotland Yard is drawn into the conspiratorial world of espionage and counter-terrorism. Commander Julie Hales (Rachael Blake) discovers under interrogation that Porter has become close with Krousov, a notorious heroin trafficker. Seeing an opportunity to finally bring him in, they offer Porter immunity in exchange for his testimony against Krousov and both he and his ex-wife Pippa are sent abroad to join a witness protection scheme. But when the witness protection scheme is compromised by an attempt on Porter's life, a suspicious Hales decides to investigate herself. The strange behavior of both Porter and superiors at MI6 lead to only one conclusion. Porter is not simply a British ambassador to Tajikstan but an MI6 operative sent undercover to expose Krousov's terrorist contacts. When Hales discovers that a nuclear bomb previously belonging to the Soviet Union is missing, the race is on to uncover Porter's involvement and prevent a nuclear disaster with or without MI6's help. Nothing and no one is as it seems in this fast and furious miniseries which will leave audiences guessing until the explosive conclusion.
