The nobleman Don Geromo wants to marry his daughter Inessa to the rich moneylender Mendoza. But the daughter loves Antonio, a noble but poor friend of her brother Fernando, and her heart is broken. Then the duenna Dorotea, Inessa's governess, appears on the scene, deciding to get her hands on the rich Mendoza ("my bag of money") and at the same time arrange the happiness of the young couple.
