A village in Emmental discovers progress. In order to finally earn the big money that neighboring areas have been raking in for a long time, a cheese factory is set up. But soon the farmers' greed for money exceeds all bounds. Franz Schnyder depicts the effects this has on the village in a dramatic and drastic manner in his classic Gotthelf film adaptation "Die Käserei in der Vehfreude" (The Cheese Factory in Vehfreude). Vehfreude is the name of a rather sleepy village in the Bernese Emmental. It has missed out on the economic boom. In the neighboring villages, cheese factories have been built and are earning big money. The men in Vehfreude also come to a decision. Instead of a new school building, they build a cheese factory and put all their eggs in one basket. The farmers deliver milk come hell or high water, even diluted milk and milk from sick cows. Honorable offers from cheese dealers are rejected so that they can do business with the "cheese king" of Langnau. But when he finally inspects the cheese, he finds it to be of dubious quality. The people of Vehfreude are left holding the bag. The lesson is hard, but effective.
