Three women from the village come to the Moscow lawyer Sedov with a request to save local agronomists from an unjust death sentence, convicted under Article 58. Sedov does not want to take on a case that carries the risk of falling under political repression, but under emotional pressure from women he agrees and goes to the provincial city of Ensk, where hearings on the case are taking place.
