17th century Denmark. An aging widower, Absolon, has a new wife, the young, beautiful Anne. His son, Martin, is about the same age and soon Anne and Martin fall in love. This relationship occurs against the backdrop of the scourge of Spanish Inquisition-style witch hunts. For the accused, the outcome is being burned at the stake.
