Chouans!

France, 1793: It has been four years since the Bastille was stormed and the revolution proclaimed. The revolution was supposed to mean the end of feudal rule, inequality and poverty. But the reality is different. There is a lack of food, the churches, an important place of community, have been closed and the peasants' children are involuntarily sent off to war before the big harvest. A group of conservative peasants is formed who want to turn back the clock. Together they plunder the towns of western France and plan the counter-revolution. The government wants to nip resistance in the bud and therefore imposes the death penalty on any armed rebels. This civil war not only divides France, but also the Kerfadec family. Aurèle, Tarquin and Céline grow up together in a chateau in Brittany. But when the revolution overtakes the whole of France, they go their separate ways. Aurèle, the only biological son of the Count of Kerfadec, joins the royalist "Chouans" and fights for them as a general. Tarquin, whom the Count took in as a small child, defends the Republic with all his might. Both fall in love with the young Céline, and so the battle for the revolution becomes a battle for love.
