Caves can form in many different natural ways, and also include the reverse action of built rock formations such as stalagmites and stalactites. In prehistoric times, more accessible caves were used as shelter and hiding places. A group of cave explorers - known by several different technical names such as potholers, spelunkers and speleologists - have gathered in Austria to plan a trip. They will take basic strong equipment and supplies: steel wire ladders, nylon rope, light sources, and concentrated foodstuffs. What draws many to the sport is the silence and mystery of the caves, which are usually a series of rooms connected by passageways. This group, like many, will determine how the cave was formed, map it out, see if there are practical uses for it and determine other possible new findings.
