Legend has it that James Cook gave New Caledonia its name because the shoreline reminded him of Scotland's coast. For the Kanak people, it was the first gesture of imperialism: a way of depriving them of their name. Hence the importance of remaking the voyage, revisiting the legend, deconstructing it.
