Brasília: Life After Design

Brasília was built in the 1950s in what was then the relatively empty interior plateau of Brazil. It was created out of nothingness for various reasons including to show what a great country Brazil was/is in showcasing it as its new capital, and to usher in a new urbanism with one of the goals to eliminate class divisions. The city plan by Lúcio Costa, called Plano Piloto, contains a major axis comprised of government buildings designed by Oscar Niemeyer, and a secondary axis sprouting from either side which contains all other urban functions, each separated into its own sector. The plan was designed ultimately to house a population of 500,000 after which satellite cities would be built to accommodate any others required to support the functions of Brasília. In being designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Plano Piloto cannot be changed. Approximately half a century later, several Brasílians talk about the reality of how Brasília and its surrounding satellite cities ultimately developed, and in general the difficulties of eking out a holistic life in the city in it not being at all what Costa and Niemeyer envisioned in how it was supposed to function for the average Brasílian. While some of those interviewed are directly affected by Brasília itself - one an architect who works in the Federal District planning department, and another, training to be a phone counselor, a "Brasília" souvenir seller on the side - and thus have some stake in the future of Plano Piloto, most are average Joes or Janes Public who must learn to survive within what is largely considered this emotionally and practically harsh environment.

Amish Stud: The Eli Weaver Story

1 hr 25 mins
While he's out fishing with his Mennonite friend Jeremiah Peters on the morning of 2 June, Amish Eli Weaver receives a message via a call to Jeremiah's cell phone that Eli's wife, 29-year-old Barbara Weaver, has been found shot dead in their bed. While the Amish elders want to deal with the issue solely within their community, the Wayne County Sheriff's Department is forced to investigate in the murder having taken place in their jurisdiction, the two investigators being Detectives Bruce London and Mike Maxwell. What is subsequently shown is the current investigation interspersed with flashbacks of Eli and Barbara's life, which Eli admits to the investigators was not always perfect. Those flashbacks show that prior to their marriage, Barbara wanted to marry for romantic love, which is not the Amish way. Eli seemingly wanted the same; he was the black sheep of his family in not always adhering to Amish strictures. London and Maxwell have their theories of who the murderer is; they suspect Eli, who isn't reacting like a typical grieving husband and father, but they know they'll have problems finding evidence because the Amish Eli will have no digital footprint; and the community's sole telephone is a public one for emergencies, usable by anyone. They hope that the unofficial traditional Amish communication network, rampant gossip, will provide some clues. They find that some talk emerges in the form of a collection of women not in the community who were a part of Eli's secret life as the Amish Stud.
