Blood and Roses Reviews

This version of Sheridan Le Fanu's Carmilla (which had been the basis for the 1932 version of VAMPYR) abounds in atmosphere and recounts the story of Carmilla (Vadim), a typical woman in modern day Rome, obsessed with her vampire ancestor, Mircalla. While celebrating her aristocratic cousin's engagement at a masked ball, Carmilla cannot resist reverting to type by killing a servant girl and biting her cousin's fiancee. The version dubbed for American audiences omits all references to lesbianism, pretty much destroying the story. (Remade as THE VAMPIRE LOVERS.)
