Maggie (Nora Aunor), a poor farmer's daughter, is intelligent and dreams of going to college to become a doctor. To realize her dream, her father Damian mortgages his farm to rich landowner Martina (Gloria Romero) who with her son Anselmo (Tirso Cruz III) looks down on Maggie's family and sneers at her ambitions. Perseverance pays off and Maggie is able to finish college and reclaim their property from Dona Martina. Maggie and Anselmo fall in love, but Dona Martina resents the relationship. Maggie gets pregnant, does not tell Anselmo and instead marries Arturo despite the objections of his sister Margarita. Then Arturo commits suicide when he finds out that the child is not his. Years pass and Maggie's daughter Margie grows up to be a beautiful but rebellious young lady with her mother's looks but the exact-opposite character. She falls in love with Jun, who turns out to be Anselmo's son, which soon complicates things.
