The story of Anne, a 19-year-old woman who escapes from prison. While jumping over the prison wall, she seriously injures her ankle, fracturing the astragalus bone. Weak and unable to walk, she is taken in by Julien, a small-time criminal who nurses her back to health. A passionate love affair develops between them, but Julien is often absent and emotionally distant due to his criminal activities. When he is eventually arrested, Anne is left alone. Determined to survive and to save money for a future with him, she turns to theft and prostitution. Throughout the film, Anne struggles for freedom, love, and dignity while facing loneliness, poverty, and repeated hardship.
