Fleeing from the Franco-Prussian war, Jeanne and her boyfriend Francis escape to the American west - but soon Jeanne is left alone to care for her baby. When she meets and falls in love with Jimmy, an American veterinarian who has also endured the loss of his spouse, she desperately tries to dissuade him from his single-minded pursuit of his wife's murderers.
