Höhenfeuer is set on a remote alpine farm in the Swiss mountains, where a family lives in near-total isolation from the outside world. The family consists of a strict father, a submissive mother, their daughter Belli, and their son Bub, who is deaf. Because there is no access to school or society, Belli takes responsibility for educating Bub, teaching him to read, write, and communicate, while both children work hard to sustain the farm. As the siblings grow older, the extreme isolation and emotional dependence between them deepen into a forbidden romantic and sexual relationship. When Belli becomes pregnant, their father reacts with violent rage and threatens to kill them. In the ensuing confrontation, Bub kills his father while trying to defend himself and his sister. Shortly afterward, the mother dies as well. Left completely alone, Belli and Bub bury their parents in the snow and remain on the mountain farm together, awaiting the birth of the child.
