The Vasseur family, normally settled in bourgeois tranquility, is shaken when the father is murdered. An honest businessman loyal to his former boss, he is quickly replaced by the boss's son. Soon after, Régis Vasseur is contacted by an old friend of his father, who hands him a file the father had set aside in case of danger. Back home, Régis finds a letter his father wrote just before his death, revealing what he had discovered, the threats he faced, and the name of his killer, along with supporting evidence. As Régis investigates his father's former employer, he learns that the new director is also involved in financial wrongdoing. While his mother falls into deep depression and is sent to a care facility, Régis asks his father's old boss for work, and is reluctantly given a temporary job. When the moment comes, Régis kills the man-the one responsible for his father's death-and surrenders to the police. He is arrested, tried, and sentenced to eight years in prison, refusing to appeal.
