Ponderous, poorly constructed script shows Lukas as a German-American returning to Germany during the early Nazi era. He becomes indoctrinated in Hitler's racist philosophies to the point where he abandons his Jewish partner's daughter to her fate. The daughter, an actress engaged to Lukas' son, answers the Nazis' racial slurs from the stage and must flee for her life while Lukas himself falls prey to the Gestapo. The story is confusingly told through a series of letters exchanged between Lukas and his business partner, a device that makes the whole process tedious, if not boring. Director Menzies does what he can with a weak story and turns out a sharply photographed production. The film earned Oscar nominations for its art direction and score.
