While wandering through the woods, Hank (Bill Paxton), his dim-witted brother Jacob (Billy Bob Thornton), and Jacob's down-and-out friend Lou (Brent Briscoe) come across the wreckage of a small plane. It must have been lying under the snow for quite some time. On board, they find only the few belongings that the crows have left behind from the pilot, and a bag containing four million dollars. It's probably drug money that no one can claim. Hank, an accountant, isn't exactly thrilled with the idea of keeping the money. Eventually, he lets the other two convince him, but only on the condition that he keeps the money and they don't split the loot until the police find the wreck and identify the pilot. Hank's wife Sarah (Bridget Fonda) immediately agrees to the simple plan. But soon Sarah begins to sow seeds of mistrust. Can Hank trust the two idiots? Will they keep their mouths shut? Didn't someone see them taking the bag out? Questions upon questions that Hank can only answer with another plan. He returns to the wreckage and leaves a few hundred thousand behind so that no one will think there is more. But while Jacob is standing guard, he loses his nerve and kills an old neighbor who happens to be driving by. Now Hank's simple plan becomes a little more complicated: after all, they have to get rid of the body.
