Charles finds himself thrown out by an attractive widow who had been housing him until then. He must now face life on the streets, with only his dog as a point of reference. Pregnant by an unknown father, Leïla, the young housemaid, can offer him nothing but her affection and her smile. Immersed in poverty, no helping hand reaches out to him, and his dignity forbids him from extending his own. He endures this situation until the day he decides to put an end to his life.
