Bring Her Back and The Substance are coming just in time

You could watch Hocus Pocus for the millionth time and realize that nostalgia is simply a construct of the mind that we created for ourselves before new content was available at our fingertips faster than we could consume it, or you could watch a new scary movie this Halloween!
This year's new offerings — which are more sparse than previous years — include remakes of old classics, continuations of some twisted franchises, streaming premieres of modern horror masterpieces, original ideas, and more.
Here are the new Halloween movies coming to Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max, and more this fall.
We also have a list of the best classic Halloween movies to watch at home, too.
The venerable found-footage V/H/S franchise continues with this eighth installment made specifically for Halloween. Like others in the series, it's an anthology made up of short films from up-and-coming directors, with an emphasis on campy scares, gory practical effects and makeup, and total lunacy (one bit about a focus group taste-testing a new soda is particularly absurd and fun). This film has already received positive reviews, with some critics calling it a high point for the series.
Premieres Friday, Oct. 3 on Shudder
Talk to Me directors Danny and Michael Philippou returned in 2025 with Bring Her Back, a well-received horror film about two young siblings who witness a terrifying ritual conducted by their new foster mother (Sally Hawkins). HBO Max was able to get this A24 film on its streaming service for the cool kids just in time for Halloween.
Premieres Friday, Oct. 3 on HBO Max
Breakups are scary! That's the theme of this Hulu original film in which a newly married couple (Megalyn Echikunwoke and Mo McRae), fresh off the high of their honeymoon, move into a new house together, and the relationship begins to sour over time. When the husband decides to move out, they discover they are stuck inside the house, trapped by an evil spirit.
Premieres Wednesday, Oct. 8 on Hulu
Demi Moore earned an Oscar nomination for her role as an aging star who undergoes an experimental procedure to retain her youth, but because this is a horror film, things go horribly wrong and Margaret Qualley pops out. Considered one of the best horror movies of 2024, The Substance, with its graphic body horror and Oscar-winning makeup, is not for the squeamish.
Premieres Friday, Oct. 10 on HBO Max
Dakota Fanning stars in this Paramount+ original horror movie about a woman who receives an unusual gift from a stranger: a mysterious box. Fanning's character is told to put in the box something she loves, something she needs, and something she hates, and then things get weird.
Premieres Friday, Oct. 10 on Paramount+
This Netflix original film is more of a psychological thriller than your traditional Halloween horror movie, but is there anything scarier than thinking you're losing your marbles? Keira Knightley stars in this adaptation of the 2016 novel by Ruth Ware, playing a journalist on a luxury cruise ship who swears she saw someone fall overboard despite all passengers and crew members being accounted for.
Premieres Friday, Oct. 10 on Netflix
One of the best foreign horror films of 2024 was the gonzo zombie movie MadS, and director David Moreau returns in 2025 with Other. Olga Kurylenko plays a woman who returns to her childhood home after the death of her overbearing mother and learns that something evil lurks nearby. This one's for everyone with mommy issues.
Premieres Friday, Oct. 17 on Shudder
Tubi, the free streaming service, is inviting trick-or-treaters to its doorstep this Halloween with R.L. Stine's Pumpkinhead, a feature film based on a short story from Nightmare Hour that was also previously adapted into an episode of Stine's The Haunting Hour: The Series. The young adult horror film follows a teenager who moves to a new town and must break a curse before Halloween ends to find his missing brother.
Premieres Friday, Oct. 17 on Tubi
In 1992, Rebecca De Mornay made everyone rethink their nanny situation with her terrifying performance in The Hand That Rocks the Cradle. Now, modern-day scream queen Maika Monroe (It Follows) gets the chance to convince parents to stay home with their babies in this remake of the original, in which a nanny infiltrates a family in a revenge plot after she blames a new mother for causing her husband's suicide.
Premieres Wednesday, Oct. 22 on Hulu
In this Indonesian feature film, a man creates an elixir that starts a zombie outbreak. That's not good. If you know anything about Indonesian action films, then you know this one will go hard.
Premieres Thursday, Oct. 23 on Netflix
Zach Cregger announced himself as a new force in horror with the 2022 gonzo horror film Barbarian, and his follow-up, Weapons, only solidifies his position as the new prince of movie madness. It would be a spoiler to reveal any details about the film other than the basic premise — several kids from a community all voluntarily march into the woods and disappear at the same time — but know that Cregger's knack for unpredictability and breaking cinematic rules still holds, even if Weapons is a few degrees more serious than Barbarian. Julia Garner and Josh Brolin star.
Premieres Friday, Oct. 24 on HBO Max
Tubi-ween is offering this literally campy original horror film about a group of influencer friends who head to Big Bear, where their trip is disrupted by a masked killer.
Premieres Friday, Oct. 24 on Tubi
