• Studied literature at the University of Vienna
• One of several employees at 20th Century Fox that was let go following the Screen Writer's Guild strike of 1959
• Began his career in 1918 as a title writer before befriending filmmaker Stephan Lorant who promoted him to assistant director for 1921's "Die Narrenkappe der Liebe"
• After making a name for himself in London, he would accept an offer by Louis B․ Mayer with MGM and come to the United States in 1938
• Worked briefly in Berlin before returning to his native Austria to work under contract for Germany's biggest film studio at the time, Ufa
• Was forced to flee Vienna in the mid 1930s which was quickly becoming a Nazi stronghold, traveling to London by 1936
