• Attended Cambridge University, where he discovered his love for film and later left to pursue a film career
• His father was the famous architectural historian Sir Nikolaus Pevsner
• Started out as a personal assistant for Ealing's Michael Balcon before becoming third assistant director on his first film, 1953's "The Cruel Sea․"
• Lived in Germany until he was 9, when his family moved to the Kings Cross area of London, and lived in the area for the rest of his life
