  • Following his death in 1986, his hometown of Terryville, Connecticut, would dedicate the Canal Street bridge in his memory, also erecting a bronze plaque in his honor
  • Passed away at age 62 after battling cancer for more than eight years
  • Dropped out of high school to enlist in the military during WWII, where he would later earn five battle stars to serving overseas
  • After years of appearing on numerous variety shows, he would land his most well-known role to date as vain anchorman Ted Baxter on 1970's "Mary Tyler Moore Show"
  • Initially a performer of ventriloquism and puppeteering, he would get his start on local television with children's programming before moving on to Hollywood in the late 1950s
  • Awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1985, one year before his death
  • Paid $150 for his role in 1960's "Psycho"
  • Well-known for his voiceover work in the early stages of his career, as he would go on to voice numerous roles in feature films including 1970's "MASH"
