• Joined CBS in 1927, where he would spend the next 19 years as a sports announcer
• When he joined the CBS network, he was hired as a staff announcer and network bookkeeper, but didn't last long as a bookkeeper
• Best known as a sportscaster who was responsible for the structure and pace of modern television and radio sports reporting
• Parts of his announcing of the 1951 Sugar Ray Robinson-Jake LaMotta championship fight were used in the 1980 film "Raging Bull․"
• Was the voice of the Army football team on the radio for several years
• Volunteered to serve as the master of ceremonies for CBS's first television broadcast in 1931
