• In his youth, he worked as a fruit picker and in the oil fields
• He was known for being a character actor in B-rated Western films
• He learned to play the mandolin, fiddle and guitar, which led to him playing at square dances when was 16 with his father
• As a fiddle player, he performed with the Beverly Hill Billies and on several radio stations
• During WWII, he worked in defense jobs and helped arrange entertainment for other defense workers
