• Studied at the London School of Economics with the intention of becoming a sociologist
• Got his start in acting after taking time off from writing his thesis to perform in a musical comedy revue, after which he was asked if he would like to act for a living
• Made his professional stage debut in "Intimacy at Eight" in 1952
