  • In 1999 he was awarded the Commander of the Order of the British Empire and Knight Bachelor of the Order of the British Empire later in 2003 at the Queen’s Birthday Honours, recognizing his services to Unicef

  • After turning 18 he was conscripted for the national service and commissioned into the Royal Army Service Corps, eventually becoming a captain and commanded small depots in west Germany
