• Trained in acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art
• First appeared on stage in a production of "The Shoemaker's Holiday" in Northampton and later made his first on-screen appearance in the 1968 film "The Magus․"
• Was inspired to pursue acting professionally both by his father, who had minor roles in many Hammer horror films, and by his drama teacher at Bedales
• Got his role on "Only Fools and Horses․․․" after the show's executive producer, Ray Butt, saw one of his stage performances
