• Presented the Hawthornden Prize in 1962 for his novel, The Sun Doctor

• Best known as an actor for several supporting roles throughout the 1960s with films including "A Man for All Seasons", "Battle of the Bulge" and later "Jaws" in 1975
• The X-Men villain Sebastian Shaw has reportedly been modeled after him
