• Joined the U․S․ Marine Corps in 1990 and was deployed to Liberia, Africa, Albania, Kosovo, and Afghanistan
• During his Marine Corps service he received numerous awards, including the Combat Action Ribbon and Joint Service Commendation Medal, and had reached the rank of Lieutenant Colonel by the time he retired in 2013
• Joined the Marine Corps Reserves in 2000 and was among the first military responders to the World Trade Center attacks in 2001
• Graduated from the University of Kansas with a degree in Theater & Film in 1992 and earned his Master's in Public Administration from Webster University in 1997
• Got started as a comedian in 1997 when he took classes at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater, where he would later teach and perform
