• After leaving the Army, he moved to Los Angeles to study Drama at UCLA, where he soon began to appear on NBC Matinee Theatre and acting in plays
• Got his big break in TV in 1958 when he landed the role of Deputy Johnny MacKay in "Lawman" alongside fellow star John Russell
• While serving in the United States Army with the 2nd Infantry Division in Alaska, he helped entertain the troops by acting, directing and writing several plays

• Wanted the part of Colorado Ryan in the John Wayne movie "Rio Bravo," but lost the role to Ricky Nelson because studio heads wanted a musical duet with Dean Martin

• While working at a Los Angeles gas station, he met one of the Warner brothers, Jack Warner, and the next day, he was given a screen test at Warner Brothers Studio
