• Attended the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles, but had to drop out and return to work due to his first wife's failing health
• Started out performing as a impressionist in vaudeville acts in the 1930s
• Being drafted into World War II cut his early radio career short, and while serving, he fought at Normandy, France on D-Day
