• Won a North Carolina Distinguished Filmmaker Award at the Carolina Film & Video Festival in 2005
• Nominated for a Tony Award in 1958 in the category of Best Supporting or Featured Actor (dramatic) for his work in "The Dark at the Top of the Stairs․"
• Served in the Navy on the destroyer USS Marshall in the Pacific during World War II and returned to the Navy during the Korean War
