• Graduated from Sarah Lawrence College with a degree in English and American literature
• Was discovered by music producer Quincy Jones when she was a teenager and signed with Mercury Records
• Best known as a singer who recorded the 1963 hit pop song "It's My Party․"
• Her other hit songs included "That's the Way Boys Are," "Sunshine, Lollipops and Rainbows" and "You Don't Own Me․"
• Her final album, 2005's "Ever Since," came out nearly 30 years after the last album she recorded during her heyday, 1976's "Love Me By Name․"
• Hosted a PBS series called "In the Life" during the 2000s, where she discussed LGBT issues
• Co-wrote the song "Out Here on My Own" with her brother, Michael, for the 1980 film "Fame․"
