• He has received numerous awards including the US Sports Academy Ronald Reagan Media Award, Jake Wade Award and the Over the Mountain Touchdown Club Lifetime Achievement Award
• While serving as head coach at Indiana, he led the Hoosiers to their first bowl victory in 75 years with a 38-37 win over previously unbeaten BYU in the Holiday Bowl
• As the head coach at Louisville, he led the Cardinals to the 1970 Pasadena Bowl, which was their first bowl appearance since 1958
• In 2013 he became a member of the Boys and Girls Clubs of America Alumni Hall of Fame
• Member of the Hall of Fame at Florida State and Louisville
• His coaching career began in 1958 as an assistant coach at Florida State
• Joined ESPN in 1987 after 28 years as a college and professional coach, including 17 seasons as a head coach
