• Inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame in 2013
• Studied theater arts at Louisiana State University
• After working in advertising following college, he would eventually relocate to Nashville to pursue singing in the early '80s
• One of his first jobs after moving to Nashville would be as a staff songwriter for a local publishing house before recording his own singles
• Released his debut solo album in 1989 in conjunction with Capitol Records
• Returned to songwriter after the failure of his first solo single, however, he would soon find recognition writing for The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band in the mid-80s
• In between semesters during college, he would travel to Alaska to work on an oil pipeline with his father
