• Attended Morehouse College, dropping out for several years because of his participation in the civil rights movement before returning to complete his English degree in the early 1970s
• His father, Horace Mann Bond, was the first African-American president of Lincoln University
• Was one of the original leaders of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and served as its communications director for five years
• Best known as a leader of the civil rights movement and chairman of the NAACP who was the host of "America's Black Forum" and the narrator of "Eyes on the Prize․"
• Served in the Georgia General Assembly for 20 years and was the president of the Southern Poverty Law Center from 1971 to 1979
