• Died of complications due to liver cancer
• While serving in the U․S․ Army in Germany, started performing in films and soon helped found the first English-speaking theatre in Berlin
• American film director Douglas Sirk discovered Hutton performing in a German theatre during his time in the U․S․ Army
• Quote: "My one ambition has nothing to do with acting․ I hope to establish a kennel near the ocean․․․ Everyone worries about a man living alone․ When I return from work I find pies, cakes and pots of spaghetti cooked by those who are convinced I'll starve to death․"
• Early in his film career, was romantically paired with actress Paula Prentiss in four consecutive films, and she later claimed the constant pairing was because they were Hollywood's tallest contract players at the time
• With his success in many Hollywood films in the 1960s, was viewed by many of Hollywood's biggest names as a successor to actor James Stewart
• His son, actor Timothy Hutton, dedicated his 1980 Academy Award win for "Best Supporting Actor" for the film "Ordinary People" to Hutton, who died a year and a half before from liver cancer
