• Best known as Judge Atkins in the award-winning 1979 film "Kramer vs․ Kramer," which was his first appearance in film after 27 years
• During the 1940s, was known for appearing in a number of crime dramas and film noirs
• Moved to New York with his family in the 1950s and began performing in dozens of Broadway and Off-Broadway plays, taking very few roles in TV and film before his death in 1984
• Worked with Works Progress Administration's Federal Theater Project in Los Angeles and became a member of the Pasadena Playhouse many years later, which served as a haven for aspiring Hollywood actors in the 1940s
