• Co-founded The Committee, an improvisational comedy group, in San Francisco in the late 1960s which would later be home to such actors as Rob Reiner and Penny Marshall
• Attended the University of Oregon before co-founding the improv troupe, The Committee
• Best known for his role as disc jockey Johnny Fever on "WKRP in Cincinnati" from 1978 to 1982 which he prepared for by working as an actual DJ in San Francisco
• Among his notable roles, he is also well-known for his role on ABC's "Head of the Class" in the late '80s and several appearances on "The Bob Newhart Show"
• Close friend of Janis Joplin before her death in 1970
• Often appears as an alter ego character named 'Don Sturdy'
