  • After serving in the Navy during WWII, he would go on to study acting at the Goodman School of Drama

  • Following several comedic roles on various series throughout the early 1960s, he landed his biggest part to date in 1967 on "The Carol Burnett Show", a role that would eventually land him six Emmy nominations as well as four Golden Globes
  • After the conclusion of "The Carol Burnett Show", he would go on to star as the villain in 1974's satirical hit Western, "Blazing Saddles"
  • Tried to find success on Broadway following college, but failed to do so and subsequently moved to Los Angeles
