  • Originally wanting to become a teacher, she first started working at an advertising agency while acting in local stage productions

  • Discovered by MGM executive Louis B․ Mayer, she was signed to a contract in 1937 and subsequently moved to the United States where she began filming titles including "Goodbye, Mr․ Chips" and "Pride and Prejudice"
  • Responsible for the Oscars putting a limit of winners' speeches, as her acceptance speech in 1942 for "Mrs․ Miniver" lasted five minutes and 30 seconds
  • Garnered five consecutive Oscar nominations in the early to mid 1940s, a record tying that of Bette Davis' streak during the late 1930s
