  • With John Kander and Bob Fosse he wrote the third-longest running show in Broadway history, "Chicago," later on going on into an Academy Award-winning film version directed by Rob Marshall in 2002
  • Attended New York University where he received his bachelor’s degree in English Literature, and earned his Master’s Degree from Columbia University in English
  • Teamed up with John Kander and wrote the musical "Cabaret," that would go on running for about 3 years, winning 11 Tony Awards, and when put into a film by Bob Fosse, 8 Academy Awards
  • In the 1950s he started working with composer Paul Klein, where they would later write his first book musical, "Morning Sun" with director Bob Fosse, who later drew out and the show was unsuccessful
  • In 1983, he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame
  • When first introduced to John Kander, they wrote a stage musical, "Golden Gate," which eventually did not work out and was never produced, but they went on writing and produced award-winning musicals
  • Awarded the Laurence Oliver Award to recognize his excellence in professional theatre, for the musical "Chicago," as Outstanding Musical Production of the 1997 season
