• Once served as a chairman on the Anti-Defamation League and later Commissioner for Cultural Affairs for the city of New York
• The Dore Schary Awards were established in his honor in 1982 by the Anti-Defamation League

• Was tapped to play himself in a 1955 episode of "I Love Lucy", only to become unavailable and have his part portrayed by Vivian Vance's husband, Philip Ober
• Worked at a resort in the Catskill Mountains as an assistant to the entertainment director of the Flagler Hotel
