• Briefly studied at Eastern Michigan University but left to pursue acting in New York City, but was later awarded an honorary degree by the school in 2008
• Gained mainstream acclaim as a member of "Law & Order" in the early '90s but was fired by creator Dick Wolf in '93 to be replaced by female counterparts, however, he was welcomed back as director for several episodes in subsequent seasons
• Taped his final episode of the "Law & Order" franchise in December 2013, marking nearly two decades of playing Captain Donald Cragen
• After a six-year absence from the "Law & Order" franchise other than a few occasional guest appearances, he returned to series' spinoff "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" in 1999
• An avid golfer, he often collects antique golf clubs
