• Won a Writers Guild of America Laurel Award for Screen Writing Achievement in 1968
• Graduated from Cornell University at the age of 19
• Began his Hollywood career in 1927 by writing titles for silent films
• Wrote his first films, "The Patent Leather Kid" and "The Private Life of Helen of Troy," in 1927
• Started out as an English teacher and later worked as a journalist after graduating from college
• Officially retired from 20th Century Fox and his producing and directing career in 1962, although he did return to the craft briefly in 1975 to write and produce "Scobie Malone․"
• Best known as a B-movie producer and director and as the writer of "Captain Blood" and "Now, Voyager․"
