- Returned to Australia at 30, where he would begin work on his first feature film, "The Adventures of Barry McKenzie", before transitioning to Hollywood in the 1980s
- Attended school with future film industry legends including Clive James, Robert Hughes, Les Murray and others
- Won numerous accolades for his direction of "Girl of the Golden West", an operatic production performed in his native Australia
