• Attended Rose Bruford College of Theatre & Performance from 1984 to 1987
• Started acting in amateur dramatics while attending Our Lady's High School in Motherwell, Scotland
• Attended the National Youth Theatre in London before starting college
• A number of the films that brought him to prominence were adaptations of novels set in Scotland
• Was 30 when he was first credited in a major film, the historical epic "Rob Roy," which earned him fans in Scotland and abroad
