• In 2001, he was inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame
• After meeting NASCAR driver Richard Petty as a child, he developed a lifelong interest in racing
• Was 16 years old and a freshman in college when he joined the Tar Heels basketball team at the University of North Carolina, and by his senior year he was a first-team All-American
