• A Kansas City native, she was inducted into the Missouri Hall of Fame in 2007
• Initially a Broadway performer, she would travel across the world to entertain troops during WWII before earning her big break and signing a contract with 20th Century Fox by the end of the '40s
• Best known for portraying Barney Fife's girlfriend on "The Andy Griffith Show" throughout the 1960s
• Made her film debut in 1948 and would eventually transition to television roles by the '50s, while also refocusing on her theater career
• After living in Los Angeles for more than half a century, she would retire to Mount Airy, North Carolina, the inspiration for Mayberry on "The Andy Griffith Show"
