• In 1971, she got married to fellow actor Don Burnett
• Attended Memphis State University, but dropped out of school in order to pursue an acting career
• Was "discovered" by talent agents who saw her perform in a Los Angeles production of "The Rattle of a Simple Man․"
• Started acting in experimental theatre troupes, including at the Front Street Repertory Theater
• As a struggling actress, she worked nights at the Los Angeles Art Theatre to make ends meet
• Came within a half-vote of being selected as Miss Tennessee in the Miss America pageant
• In 1963, she competed in a pageant and won the title of Miss Memphis
